What happens to the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
Due to sunlight, salt water and wave action the plastic is broken up into smaller and smaller fragments. These fragments are reduced to pieces that are tiny as grains of sand. These plastic pieces are eaten by sea animals. In consequence, plastic enters the food chain and ends up on our plate.

It is a area of 1.8 Million square kilometers.
It's made up of at least 79,000 tonnes of trash.
A big part of the patch lies underwater.
It's formed by ocean currents.
